Ode to Thomas O Chair Story
The exquisite Ode to Thomas O Chair I plucked from page 166 of Thomas O’Brien’s American Modern book (Abrams, NY 2010). He based his version on a “set of 1930s French saddle-shaped gaming chairs.” It was the hourglass back that sold me. Anything with an hourglass shape, I love. Anything that conjures the human form––male or female, really––I love. Remember the line from the Jerry McGuire movie, “You had me at hello”? That’s me with page 166. I turned the page, and there they were. I had to have them. I’m pretty sure I looked like the smiley face, heart eyes emoji. I love the scale and proportions. They were for my showroom, so I wanted a low back so one could see beyond the chairs. But that shape…Oo la la.
