This two-career couple (both are lawyers) and their very active children live life at a breakneck tempo – their ability to juggle multiple competing schedules is really impressive. I created a new interior design for their kitchen and family room that’s better-suited to their lives’ everyday rhythms. We didn’t want to change the footprint of the home, so we found clever ways to use every nook and cranny.
To open up space between the two rooms, we brought down one load-bearing wall, then used reclaimed wood beams to hide the necessary structural reinforcements. The exhaust from the floating hood over the stove was an engineering triumph well worth the effort! And every piece in the kitchen now offers storage, an important detail for this pair of gourmet cooks. I derived the palette for this interior design from the beautiful stone fireplace (which I left intact) and the copper pieces the couple collects. Their home is now personalized with their own art and antiques, and they can function.
